The Water | Stone series
In May 2013 I was invited to mount an exhibition of new works at Renmin [The People’s] University School of Art in Beijing. I made a group of ten small watercolors for the show, entitled Day Corrupted and Enriched by Night. During our stay in Beijing, my wife and I would join colleagues for coffee at a quiet campus hangout called Water | Stone. The Chinese phrase “Water through stone” expresses the virtues of patience and persistence. Following my return I continued to infuse small paintings with a vaguely Asian style in a quest for a more universal balance of peace and vitality; so it seemed appropriate to name the pictures after the coffee-house where we had spent some pleasant hours.
